On Saturday 18th September Bayside participated, together with Westside, in the annual Clean-up organised by the Environmental Safety Group. There were another 26 groups working around Gibraltar and we worked on the area of Catalan Bay car park and focussed on removing the many small items of rubbish, such as cigarette butts and small bits of plastic, from getting into the sea.
We had well over 70 volunteers from both schools as well as members of staff. The pupils were mainly from year 13 but there were some year 12s and a few younger ones who joined us. It was truly inspiring to see the pupils cleaning with enthusiasm and energy. We noticed that the gender divide and the jobs carried out by the boys, rather than the girls, is no longer so prevalent. It was really good to see the pupils simply getting on with the tasks required and working well in teams regardless of gender. We have cleaned this site before and we noticed that there was much less old rubbish but there was evidence of people perhaps parking their cars, eating a takeaway, and then dumping their waste onto the car park ground. We sincerely hope that our volunteers spread the word amongst their peers that this is not what we should be doing. All in all the event went very well and the staff were very proud of their pupils' efforts. It was well worth the early wake-up!
