Our students were invited to take part in the Rock Retreat organised by world renowned illustrator Eleanor Dobbs. Eleanor has illustrated books for both Peter Rabbit and Harry Potter. This will be a great opportunity for our students. Students took part in a whole-day workshop on Wednesday 25th May. They went on a guided drawing tour in the town area where pupils were able to capture the hustle and bustle of town with some quick sketches. They then continued up to the Garrison Library where they met with other illustrators visiting the rock.

It is the 40th anniversary of the Falkland’s war, and the Gibraltar Archives have put together an exhibition, at John Mackintosh Hall, highlighting Gibraltar’s contribution to the conflict. Not only is it interesting because of the historical significance but it is also helpful to our students as they complete their projects organised by the Friends of Gibraltar, which is based upon either Gibraltar’s ties to the Falkland’s or the Platinum Jubilee. This project is due on 3rd June. The aim of this visit, and the project, is to enrich their history lessons and build on their knowledge of local history.
GABBA representatives working in Bayside and Westside, Adam Cassaglia and Monica Brown, asked if we would host this visit. Both schools agreed that it would be a great experience for our students.
The visit was well worth it and enjoyed by all. Carlos Cabezas was friendly and engaging - an excellent role model for our youngsters. The following was written by GABBA to summarise the event. Mr Dale Moreno, one of our teachers, went on the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride on Sunday 22nd May. The School decided to support this venture but having a 'dress-up' Dapper Day. It was great fun and funds were raised for Cancer Relief.
Students at Bayside Comprehensive School were treated to a demonstration of high skilled dishes by Chef Patron -Nico Students at Bayside Comprehensive School were treated to a demonstration of high skilled dishes by Chef Patron -Nico Fitzgerald Wednesday the 27th April. Nico is a London based chef who was born and raised in Gibraltar. He has recently reached the quarter finals in Masterchef the Professionals and is currently in the process of opening his own restaurant - Llanito by Nico Fitzgerald.
This amazing opportunity saw Bayside's Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE students watch Nico make: Confit chicken leg and pan-fried chicken breast with spiced celeriac purée along with boulangère potatoes and charred tenderstem broccoli accompanied by a chicken and madeira jus and tarragon oil. This was followed by an Apple Tarte Tatin with vanilla ice cream and raspberry fluid gel. GCSE students work towards making 3 complex and layered dishes of this nature in just 3 hours at the end of their GCSE. Watching Nico cover some of the skills they have been building already and showing them how to put together attractively presented plates, gives them the confidence that they can produce quality dishes at the end of the GCSE. During the demonstration Nico asked the students questions and offered explanations to link the cooking methods to the theory they are developing in their GCSE. Students were fascinated by the layers and layers of skills and the level of preparation that goes into making these dishes in a restaurant. The different career pathways in this valuable profession were explained and the possible routes they could take should they wish to gain experience in this field. Thank you Nico - it not only looked stunning but we can honestly say it tasted absolutely amazing ! Wednesday the 27th April. Nico is a London based chef who was born and raised in Gibraltar.
