Why do we learn music in schools?
Learning music in the modern curriculum serves important purposes in both academic and personal skills. Music is proven to improve cognitive skills such as memory, concentration and problem solving. Our scheme of learning is designed to encourage creativity and expression in our young people through both performing and composing. Learners are given regular opportunities to perform, increasing self esteem and confidence. Our diverse listening and appraising curriculum provides opportunities to learn about a variety of cultures and traditions from around the world, but also exploring local music and history. Learners also discover the rich history of Western classical music.
Extra curricular programme
Outside of the classroom, we run a live performance workshop every Friday lunchtime which is open to all year groups. This is where we prepare for our Christmas and Summer concerts. It is also a welcoming community, allowing learners from across all years groups to work together and get to know like minded people. On Wednesday lunchtime we host a composition club where learners can use Logic Pro X to write their own music.
GCSE and A-Level
We follow the OCR course for both qualifications.
